Drawings in black and white on rice paper. Recently the style Asian “Sumi” Ink brushwork has caught my attention.
Ancient art thinkers were concerned by the possibility of colour seducing the eye, in contrast to the simple honesty of black and white. I find that subjects drawn in pen and ink, the black lines on a white surface, particularly on rice paper’s delicate texture very dynamic.
Using this style I have developing a series that I call the Miraculous Forrest - drawings of happy trees, flowers and waterfalls. I am inviting you to take I am inviting you to take a visual journey into this Miraculous Forrest.

About Ram Marrero
Ramon Marrero Jr was born in New York City and as far back as he can remember he has had this deep abiding interest in visual arts. Growing up his mother had a print by Van Gogh’s “Sun Flowers” which her friend gave her, that survived the bombing of London in WW2. This was an early introduction of what would inspire his love for art. As a young child he was always drawing. His mother would take the grocer’s brown paper bags, cut them into sheets, and he would spend his time drawing.
Ramon Marrero had the privilege of attending the Art Students League New York City in 1965 for a brief time before he was deployed as a Medic Corpsman in the Vietnam War. Following his tour of duty he continued to study Art at Delaware State University. Over time as a result of other pressing commitments he was pulled away from Art.
Now as a senior artist Ramon has had a personal renaissance and is expressing his art journey in diverse styles. In the last few years Asian “Sumi” Ink brushwork has caught his attention and it is this technique he uses to interpret his subjects in pen and ink.
Drawing from his memory and imagination his work depicts scenes of water flowing down providing refreshing energy to the trees and flowers below.
In contrast Ramon was also influenced by what was called “the New York School of Abstract Expressionism" which started at the Art Students League in the 1900s. He has recently been influenced by the work of Australian Artist John Russell, an Australian artist who lived around the time of the French Impressionist. His explosive paintbrush strokes and bright colour speak a visual language that seeks to convey the essence of the moment in time.
