Still Life as I Know it
by Helen Evans
This collection of works by Helen Evans form a loose narrative, tracing the presence of the everyday - the people, objects, and environments that continue to shape Helen's life.
The Little Room
6-28 June 2026
Wednesday to Sunday, 9.00am-2.00pm

Helen Evans is not a minimalist, though at times she would like to be. The weight of possessions can feel heavy. Following a significant downsize in 2025, she discovered that very little had truly been let go.
For Helen objects hold memory, acting as totems. They carry the essence of who, what and where - markers of a life lived through people, places, and time.
Having recently marked a milestone birthday, her attention has turned more deliberately towards reflection. The works in this exhibition are selected from five related still life collections made across 2025 and 2026 - Feast, Goodbye Lot 20, Pieces of You, A Sense of Self, and a series of monthly paintings.
Together, these works form a loose narrative. They trace the presence of the everyday - the people, objects, and environments that continue to shape her life. Not as static arrangements, but as active carriers of memory and meaning.
In Helen’s work, still life is anything but still. It is a way of noticing, holding, and returning.
Represented Artists:
Helen Evans
Helen Evans is a full-time artist known for her vibrant, richly layered acrylic paintings.
Her still life works are painted from direct observation, with looking and drawing forming the foundation of her practice. Natural light, and its shifting impact on colour and value, remains a constant source of fascination.
Working primarily on wood panel, Helen builds complex surfaces that sit between representation and abstraction, exploring the experience of seeing and the emotional resonance of the everyday.
