"My interest in working with clay began back in the early 1990s when I was learning the practice and principles of Ikebana – the art of Japanese flower arrangement."
I was drawn to the simple, strong forms of traditional and contemporary ceramic Ikebana containers which complement the arrangements, and decided I would learn how to make my own.
My ceramic practice since then has taken many different paths, but I still enjoy the challenge of making vessels which can stand alone or in
harmony with natural materials. My primary aim is to make functional vessels to be used and enjoyed.
For ‘Nature Contained’ I will be using containers of two basic shapes, all with a satin- black glaze, and aim to create different arrangements, each focussing on one colour, or no colour, and emphasising the three elements of ikebana design, shin (heaven),
soe (man) and hikae (earth).
